Dr. Yamin Zhang

Yamin Zhang , the Singapore-based scientist redefining how the human heart heals.

Originally from China, Zhang earned her PhD in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology and was named to MIT Technology Review’s 2025 Innovators Under 35 (TR35). Her journey spanned from China to the US, before landing at the National University of Singapore as Assistant Professor and Presidential Young Professor.

At just 34, she leads a research group designing self-powering, bioresorbable medical devices - technologies that heal the body and then simply disappear.

Her most remarkable creation: a wireless pacemaker, smaller than a grain of rice, is built from biodegradable metals like magnesium and zinc (powered by the body’s own fluids) and dissolves once healing is complete.

Inspired by her work at Northwestern University, this breakthrough could spare patients - especially infants born with heart conditions - from risky surgeries.

Beyond the lab, she’s pioneering sustainable bioelectronics - creating materials and batteries that leave no trace, proving that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand.
