Jerene Yang is the Synthetic Data Generation Lead at OpenAI, responsible for the data that trains its most advanced models.

Jerene speaks about what it really takes to keep AI reliable at massive scale: the invisible work behind high data quality that keeps the AI trustworthy and the robust infrastructure that must keep running under all circumstances.

Born in Singapore, Jerene studied Computer Science and Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University, then worked at Google on large-scale database and storage systems.

At OpenAI, she and her team now focus on system robustness and data quality, helping ensure products like ChatGPT and other AI agents can respond reliably to millions of people in real time.

Her philosophy? AI isn’t magic. It’s machines, data, and infrastructure and the real work is making sure the system keeps going, even when parts of it fail.
